What are Facial Implants?

Facial implants are specially pre-formed three-dimensional solid silicone that is compatible with human tissues and designed to enhance or complement your facial features. These implants can improve facial balance and proportion, addressing concerns about a weak chin, sunken cheeks or lack of facial contour.  While facial implants are quite useful as stand-alone procedures, they are commonly used in conjunction with other procedures. Common combinations include adding a chin implant to rhinoplasty to balance the profile, cheek implants to a Facelift to bring greater midface vitality, or a temporal implant with Facelift or Neck Lift to restore overall facial contour and balance.

There are several different types of Facial Implants, each provides augmentation to areas of the face that are depressed or deficient, often giving patients a gaunt look or undesirable profile.

Facial implants are safe, solid, don’t leak and can last a lifetime.  They are also one of the few reversible procedures in facial cosmetic surgery.  They may be removed or replaced with a different size implant at any time, even years later.

All Facial Implant surgeries can be performed in our beautiful AAAHC accredited operating suite under IV Sedation.

CHIN AUGMENTATION (CHIN IMPLANT)

Chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve facial balance and definition by enhancing the projection and contour of the chin. Patients who choose chin augmentation often feel that their chin is under-projected or out of proportion with the rest of their facial features.

A well-positioned chin can significantly improve facial harmony and the appearance of the jawline and neck. While chin augmentation may be performed as a standalone procedure, it is commonly combined with rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, neck contouring, or liposuction to achieve a more balanced overall result.

Chin augmentation is typically performed using a solid silicone implant available in a variety of shapes and sizes. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney will evaluate your facial proportions and recommend an implant that best complements your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

The procedure generally takes about one hour to perform. The implant is placed through a small incision either beneath the chin or inside the lower lip and is secured in a precise position. When an external incision is used, it is carefully hidden within a natural crease beneath the chin and typically heals inconspicuously. Incisions placed inside the mouth leave no visible external scar.

Following surgery, patients can expect mild swelling and temporary tightness as the tissues adapt to their new contour. As healing progresses, the implant becomes a natural-feeling part of the facial framework, providing long-lasting improvement in chin projection and facial balance.

CHEEK AUGMENTATION (CHEEK IMPLANTS)

Cheek augmentation is a procedure designed to enhance the projection, contour, and definition of the midface. Patients who feel their cheeks appear flat, under-projected, or lack structural support may benefit from cheek implants to create improved facial balance and more youthful facial contours.

The goal of cheek augmentation is to restore or enhance the natural three-dimensional shape of the midface while maintaining harmony with the surrounding facial features. When properly selected and positioned, cheek implants can provide subtle, long-lasting enhancement without creating an overfilled or artificial appearance.

Cheek augmentation is typically performed using solid silicone implants available in a variety of shapes and sizes. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney will evaluate your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals to determine the most appropriate implant style and projection.

The procedure generally takes about one hour to perform. Implants are placed through small incisions inside the mouth, eliminating any visible external scars. A precise pocket is created over the cheekbone, and the implant is positioned to enhance cheek projection and contour while maintaining a natural appearance.

Cheek augmentation is frequently combined with other facial procedures, including facelift surgery, neck contouring, rhinoplasty, or chin augmentation, to achieve optimal facial balance and harmony.

TEMPLE AUGMENTATION (TEMPORAL IMPLANTS)

Temple augmentation is a procedure designed to restore volume and contour to hollow or sunken temples. Loss of volume in the temple region can occur naturally with aging and may contribute to a more skeletal or fatigued appearance.

Temporal implants provide a long-lasting solution for patients seeking structural enhancement of the temple area. Made from soft, flexible medical-grade silicone, these implants are carefully selected and positioned to restore facial balance and create a smoother transition between the forehead, temples, and cheeks.

Temple augmentation is typically performed through small, well-concealed incisions and generally takes about one hour to complete. The goal is to restore natural contour and fullness while maintaining harmony with the surrounding facial features.

For some patients, temporal implants may serve as an alternative to repeated filler treatments when a more permanent solution is desired.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR FACIAL IMPLANT SURGERY?

Facial implants may be an excellent option for individuals seeking improved facial balance, definition, or structural support.

Patients considering chin augmentation often feel their chin lacks adequate projection or is out of proportion with the rest of their facial features. Ideal candidates typically have healthy teeth and a stable bite relationship, allowing the chin to be evaluated independently from underlying jaw alignment concerns.

Patients with naturally flat or under-projected cheeks, as well as those who have experienced age-related volume loss in the midface, may benefit from cheek augmentation. Cheek implants can help improve facial contour and restore structural support to the midface.

Temporal implants are designed for patients with hollowing of the temples who desire a long-lasting solution for volume restoration. They may be particularly appealing to individuals who have previously relied on filler treatments and are seeking a more permanent option.

In general, the best candidates for facial implant surgery are healthy, non-smoking individuals with realistic expectations and a desire for natural-looking improvement. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney will perform a comprehensive facial analysis and discuss whether facial implants—or alternative treatments—are most appropriate for your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A FACIAL IMPLANT CONSULTATION AT FPSA?

Your consultation is designed to be comprehensive, educational, and personalized. Most consultations last approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

During your visit, Dr. Delaney will review your medical history, discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals, and perform a detailed facial analysis. The consultation focuses on evaluating facial balance, proportion, and structure to determine whether facial implants—or alternative treatments—are the most appropriate option for achieving your desired outcome.

If facial implants are recommended, Dr. Delaney will explain the available options, review implant styles and sizes, and discuss how each may affect your facial contours. This process allows for a customized treatment plan tailored to your anatomy and goals.

Standardized photographs will be obtained, and digital imaging may be used to help facilitate communication regarding potential surgical changes. While no surgeon can guarantee a specific result, digital imaging can be a valuable tool for ensuring a shared understanding of your treatment goals and expectations.

A patient concierge will guide you through the remainder of the consultation process, including reviewing educational materials, before-and-after photographs, surgical planning, medical clearance requirements, and pricing information. You will also have ample opportunity to ask questions and discuss the procedure, recovery process, and expected outcomes.

At Facial Plastic Surgery Associates, our goal is to provide clear communication, individualized treatment recommendations, and attentive support throughout every stage of your surgical journey.

Before Surgery

What do I need to do before surgery?

With any surgical procedure, it is necessary to avoid any medications or supplements that may thin the blood two weeks before and two weeks after your surgery. Our clinical staff will review instructions relating to medications and supplements at your pre-operative appointment.

Dr. Delaney does not operate on patients who smoke, chew tobacco, vape or take illicit drugs prior to or at the time of surgery, as these activities have a detrimental effect to the healing process.

We recommend that patients avoid alcohol for two weeks prior to and after your surgery. You should maintain a healthy diet and avoid salt, fatty foods and processed sugar.  Some patients eat pineapple for its naturally occurring bromelain. We recommend taking Arnica, Bromelain, and Vitamin C supplements 5 days before the surgery and 1 week following surgery.   It is also very important to avoid significant sun exposure.

On the day of surgery and for the following two weeks, you should wear loose fitting or button-up tops and dresses to avoid placing unnecessary pressure or stress on the implant areas.

Procedure

Can I have more than one procedure done at the same time?

It is very common for Dr. Delaney to combine Facial Implant surgery with other procedures. This can be quite beneficial to patients to avoid multiple recovery periods and multiple usage of anesthesia.

Cheek Augmentation Surgery is often performed with Facelift or Neck Lift surgery.  Chin Augmentation Surgery is commonly performed with Rhinoplasty, Revision Rhinoplasty, Facelift or Neck Lift surgery.  Temporal Augmentation is often paired with Facelift or Neck Lift surgery.  can be performed at our AAAHC accredited surgical suite under IV Sedation anesthesia.

Fortunately, with our in-office fully accredited AAAHC in-office operating suite, you can have any combination of Facial Implants and other facial plastic surgery procedures done on the same day.  Most of our patients prefer this approach because it allows you to take advantage of having just one recovery period.

What are the risks of Facial Implant surgery?

Facial Implant procedures are considered safe. As with other cosmetic procedures, some risks may occur. A facial implant can shift slightly out of alignment and would need to be placed back in its proper position. Infection can occur with any operation. If an infection occurs around a facial implant and does not clear up after treatment with antibiotics, the implant might have to be temporarily removed and replaced at a later time.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER FACIAL IMPLANT SURGERY?

Facial implants are designed to provide long-lasting structural enhancement while maintaining a natural appearance. Once healing is complete, most patients find that their implant feels like a natural part of their facial framework.

Following surgery, you will recover in our AAAHC-accredited surgical facility under the supervision of our clinical team. Before being discharged home, you will be evaluated to ensure that you are comfortable and recovering appropriately. Because facial implant surgery is typically performed with anesthesia or sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you as instructed.

Swelling and mild discomfort are expected during the early stages of recovery and gradually improve over the following weeks. Most patients can return to light daily activities within a few days, although recovery timelines vary depending on the specific procedure performed and whether it was combined with other facial surgeries.

During the first two weeks after surgery, it is important to sleep with your head elevated and avoid pressure on the surgical area to help minimize swelling. You may shower after your first postoperative visit unless instructed otherwise.

Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that significantly increase your heart rate should be avoided for approximately 2 to 3 weeks, or longer if recommended by Dr. Delaney based on your individual procedure and healing progress.

Dr. Delaney and the team at Facial Plastic Surgery Associates will monitor your recovery closely through a series of postoperative visits and provide detailed instructions to help ensure a smooth healing process and optimal result.

How long is the recovery time?

Recovery time for Facial Implant surgery can vary depending on the type of implant surgery you have and whether or not you have additional procedures completed at the same time.

Most patients having standalone Facial Implant surgery feel very little pain immediately after surgery. Later in the evening, some report a feeling of tightness or soreness. If you have standalone implant surgery (cheek, chin, or temporal) recovery time is a week on average. The amount of swelling or bruising will vary also by patient and based on the type of augmentation surgery you have.  For cheek augmentation, it will take a few weeks for the swelling to go down. You may also experience some numbness.

At around a week, women may wear makeup, men may shave, and most feel comfortable going back to work or running errands.

The benefits and duration of Facial Implant results can last a lifetime.  Your aesthetic journey will be a rewarding experience when you go hand in hand with the best of hands, Dr. Delaney and the entire FPSA team.

When is my pre-operative appointment?

Your pre-op appointment will take place two to three weeks before your surgery. We strive to make this appointment as stress free as possible. At this appointment, you will receive instructions for before and after your procedure, sign consents, take pre-operative photos, and make final payment.  You will also receive the list of your prescriptions. Most of our patients find that using the Capsule Pharmacy service in advance of the pre-op is quite convenient because all prescriptions will be delivered to our office and ready for you at the pre-op appointment.

Patients can also take this opportunity to select skin care products appropriate for pre-operative and post-operative skin health and optimal healing.

ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO FACIAL IMPLANTS?

Whether facial implants are the best option depends on the area being treated, your anatomy, and your aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney will discuss all appropriate treatment options and recommend the approach best suited to your needs.

Dermal fillers can provide temporary improvement in facial contour and volume and are commonly used as a non-surgical alternative to facial implants. While fillers offer the advantage of minimal downtime, they require periodic maintenance treatments to maintain results.

Facial fat transfer is another option for restoring volume, particularly in the cheeks and temples. Fat transfer uses your own tissue to enhance facial contours and can provide long-lasting improvement. However, some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during the healing process, and the degree of volume retention can vary among patients.

For patients seeking enhancement of chin projection, alternatives may include injectable fillers or, in select cases, a sliding genioplasty. Unlike a chin implant, a genioplasty repositions the patient’s own chin bone and may be recommended when correction of the underlying skeletal structure is desired.

Facial implants remain one of the most predictable and durable options for enhancing facial structure and projection. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney will help determine whether facial implants, fillers, fat transfer, or another approach is most appropriate for your anatomy and goals.
