Designed for Out-of-Town Patients

Traveling for surgery requires thoughtful planning—but it does not need to be complicated. We routinely work with patients from across Texas and throughout the U.S. and have built a process that makes the experience efficient, organized, and easy to navigate.

From virtual consultation to recovery planning, our team helps coordinate the details so you can focus on preparing for surgery and healing comfortably.

How It Works

1. Virtual Consultation

Begin with a virtual consultation to discuss your goals, review photos, and determine whether surgery may be appropriate.

2. Plan Your Trip

If you are a candidate, we will help coordinate timing, pricing, travel recommendations, and what to expect before surgery.

3. Arrive in Houston

Most patients arrive 1–2 days before surgery for an in-person evaluation, photographs, and pre-operative visit.

4. Recover Locally, Then Return Home

Remain in Houston for the recommended recovery period so we can monitor healing and clear you for travel home safely.

HOW LONG SHOULD I STAY IN HOUSTON?

Recommended Recovery Time for Out-of-Town Surgical Patients

Most out-of-town patients should plan to remain in Houston for a short period after surgery to allow for early recovery, post-operative monitoring, and follow-up before traveling home.

When Can I Fly Home?

Most patients are ready to travel home once they are beyond the immediate postoperative period and have recovered enough to travel comfortably and safely.

In general, this is after the acute surgical phase has passed, discomfort is improving, and early healing is progressing as expected.

Before returning home, patients should typically:

  • be seen for their early postoperative follow-up visits
  • be healing appropriately without concern for early complications
  • feel well enough to travel comfortably
  • be eating, hydrating, and moving around normally
  • have had most or all permanent sutures removed, depending on the procedure

For many patients, this is after their second postoperative visit, when the most intensive part of early recovery has passed and travel feels significantly more manageable.

The recommended stay ranges above are designed to allow for this early healing window and help ensure patients are ready to return home as safely and comfortably as possible.

Do I Need Someone With Me?

Yes. Patients undergoing surgery should plan to travel with a responsible adult and should not plan to recover alone immediately after surgery.

For safety, all surgical patients should arrange for someone to:

  • escort them after surgery
  • stay with them the first night
  • help with medications and meals
  • assist with transportation
  • accompany them to early follow-up visits if needed

This is especially important for patients undergoing sedation or general anesthesia.

Where Should I Stay?

We recommend staying close to our office during the early recovery period for comfort, convenience, and easier follow-up.

For most patients, the best accommodations are:

  • within 10–15 minutes of the office
  • quiet and private
  • easy to access
  • elevator-friendly
  • comfortable for rest and recovery

Our Preferred Nearby Hotel

The Chifley Houston, part of the Hilton Tapestry Collection, is a convenient option for many of our out-of-town patients. It is located close to our office, offers larger suite options for added privacy and comfort, and is especially well-suited for patients traveling with a companion or overnight nurse. The Chifley Houston

For patients undergoing longer procedures—particularly facelift surgery—we ask that the first night after surgery be spent at The Chifley with overnight nurse care arranged. The Chifley’s junior suite layout is especially well-suited for this, offering added privacy, more space to recover comfortably, and a separate area for overnight support when needed.

Patients interested in staying at The Chifley should ask our patient concierge for our preferred booking code, which offers access to a premier discounted rate based on availability.

Additional Nearby Hotel Options

For patients seeking other nearby accommodations, we are also happy to recommend several well-located options depending on your preferred level of comfort and service:

  • The Post Oak Hotel – A more elevated luxury option with full-service amenities, spacious accommodations, and a highly private setting.
  • The Houstonian Hotel – A quieter, resort-style option with a more secluded feel, ideal for patients prioritizing privacy and a calmer recovery environment.
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Houston Near the Galleria – A more practical extended-stay option with suite-style rooms, added space, and convenient access for patients looking for a more comfortable mid-range stay.

Our team is happy to help guide patients toward the best fit based on recovery needs, preferred location, and level of support.

Virtual Consultations for Out-of-Town Patients

For many out-of-town patients, the process begins with a virtual consultation.

This allows patients to meet with Dr. Delaney, discuss their goals, and begin planning from home before making arrangements to travel to Houston.

Virtual consultations are often the most efficient first step for patients traveling from elsewhere in Texas or from out of state, and help determine whether surgery may be appropriate before coordinating travel.

What Can Be Done Virtually

During your virtual consultation, we can typically:

  • discuss your goals and concerns
  • review your medical history
  • evaluate photographs
  • determine whether you may be a surgical candidate
  • discuss procedure options
  • review expected recovery and timing
  • outline pricing and next steps

This allows many patients to begin the planning process without needing to make an unnecessary trip to Houston.

What Is Finalized In Person

Because photographs and video have limitations, all surgical plans are confirmed in person before surgery.

Your in-person visit allows for:

  • a full physical examination
  • detailed facial analysis
  • professional photography
  • final surgical planning
  • review of risks, recovery, and consent
  • pre-operative preparation

This step is important to ensure your surgical plan is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your anatomy.

Planning Your Visit

Most out-of-town patients travel to Houston 1–2 days before surgery for their in-person evaluation and pre-operative visit.

This approach allows patients to begin planning from home while ensuring all final decisions are made carefully and in person before surgery.

Traveling for Surgery Should Feel Straightforward

Traveling for surgery requires thoughtful planning—but it does not need to feel complicated. Our team routinely helps patients from across Texas and throughout the U.S. coordinate consultation, surgery, recovery, and follow-up with clarity and confidence.

From your first consultation to your return home, we aim to make the process feel organized, efficient, and well supported at every step.

What if I have questions after I return home?

Our team remains available after you return home. We will provide detailed recovery instructions and are available to address questions, concerns, and healing updates as you recover.

How are follow-up visits handled after I return home?

Many follow-up visits after the early postoperative period can be handled virtually, depending on the procedure and how you are healing. If an in-person visit is needed, our team will help coordinate accordingly.

FAQs

Can I have surgery if I live out of state?

Yes. We routinely care for patients who travel from across Texas and across the country for surgery. Much of the planning process can be done remotely before you travel to Houston.

Do I need to come to Houston more than once?

Yes. Most out-of-town patients begin with a virtual consultation, then travel to Houston for surgery, recovery, and early follow-up. After returning home, many follow-up visits can be handled virtually if healing is progressing as expected.

That said, we do like patients to return periodically for in-person follow-up when possible, particularly for longer-term assessment, postoperative photography, or if any concerns arise during healing. If you are doing well, most routine follow-up can be managed remotely, but in-person visits are always preferred when needed.

How long should I stay in Houston after surgery?

This depends on the procedure performed. Recommended stay varies by procedure and is outlined above. In general, patients should plan to remain in Houston through the early healing period and until cleared for travel.

When can I safely travel home?

Most patients are ready to travel home once they are beyond the immediate postoperative period, healing appropriately, and have been seen for their early follow-up visits. For many patients, this is after their second postoperative visit.

Do I need someone to travel with me?

Yes. All surgical patients should plan to travel with a responsible adult and should not plan to recover alone immediately after surgery.

Can I recover alone?

Patients should not plan to recover alone during the earliest part of recovery. You will need assistance after surgery, particularly the first night. For longer procedures, overnight nursing support may also be recommended.
