Breast augmentation is one of the most rewarding and confidence-boosting procedures we perform. Whether you’re enhancing your natural curves, restoring volume after pregnancy or weight loss, or simply creating the silhouette you’ve always wanted, understanding the breast augmentation recovery process is key to feeling prepared and comfortable every step of the way.

Recovery and Restrictions after Breast Augmentation Surgery

At Body by Hamati here in Houston, Texas, our team is dedicated to providing a smooth, safe, and supportive experience — from your consultation to full recovery. Here’s what you can expect after your breast augmentation surgery and how to ensure the best possible results.

The First 24–48 Hours After Breast Augmentation

Immediately following your breast augmentation, you’ll spend a short time in recovery as the anesthesia wears off. It’s completely normal to feel tightness, pressure, or soreness across the chest during this stage. You’ll be dressed in a supportive surgical bra or a supportive wrap to help minimize swelling and protect your new breast implants.

Most patients go home the same day and rest with their upper body elevated. Having a trusted friend or family member assist you during the first night is always helpful. We’ll provide pain medication and antibiotics to keep you comfortable and promote proper healing during the initial breast augmentation recovery period.

The First Week: Healing and Adjusting

During the first week, you’ll notice gradual improvement each day. Swelling and a sense of fullness are expected as your body adapts to the implants. Continue wearing your support garment as directed, and continue to avoid any lifting or reaching above your shoulders. You will have a dressing protecting your incisions, but you are unlikely to have a surgical drain.

By the end of the week, many of my patients feel ready to return to light work or daily activities. If your implants were placed above the muscle, you will usually feel back to normal a little quicker. You’ll come in for a post-op check so Dr. Hamati can ensure your recovery is on track and answer any questions about your breast implant healing process. You can return to driving short distances once you are comfortable and not under the influence of any sedating medications.

Weeks 2–4: Softening, Settling, and Regaining Comfort

Around the second week, most patients start to feel much more comfortable. Swelling decreases, and the breasts implants begin to “drop and fluff” — meaning they settle into a softer, more natural position. This can be a rather dramatic difference, particularly for implants placed underneath the pec muscle.

You can resume gentle walking or light activity, but it’s still important to avoid upper body workouts or lifting anything heavy. Continue wearing a supportive, non-underwire bra throughout this phase of breast implant recovery.

Patients often notice improved comfort and confidence by the third or fourth week as their new shape continues to refine.

Weeks 4–6: Returning to Your Normal Routine

By one to two months post-op, most patients feel nearly back to normal. Swelling has mostly resolved, energy levels return, and the breasts begin to look and feel more natural.

Once cleared by Dr. Hamati, you can resume regular exercise — including upper body workouts — and gradually return to all your usual activities. This is also when you’ll start to see your final breast augmentation results, with improved softness and contour. Around this time, you can also start scar massages, allowing your scar to flatten and soften, giving you optimal results.

Long-Term Breast Augmentation Healing

Although most healing happens within the first two months, the body continues to adjust for several more weeks. Some patients experience temporary changes in nipple or skin sensitivity, which typically resolve with time.

Your implants will continue to settle into their final position over the next few months, creating smooth, natural results. Usually, this is around three months out from surgery. Following your post-op care instructions and attending all follow-up visits will help ensure your breast augmentation results stay beautiful for years to come.

Key Postoperative Restrictions

Following the personalized instructions provided by Dr. Hamati will help ensure a smooth recovery:

  • Avoid smoking or nicotine use, as it can significantly delay healing and increase risk of issues.
  • Prioritize quality nutrition and stay hydrated, focusing on foods that promote healing and reduce swelling. Minimizing salt will minimize swelling. Maintaining a high-protein diet will help your body get the nutrients it needs to heal from surgery. You may need a stool softener to prevent constipation that results from anesthesia and pain medications.
  • No heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least six weeks to protect your results and prevent complications.
  • Wear your supportive bra 24/7 for about 4 weeks, removing it briefly if you need a break or want to shower. Once you feel comfortable, you can start wearing it only during the day and removing it while you sleep at night.
  • Don’t shower for the first 24 hours after surgery but maintain proper hygiene by showering daily afterwards.
  • Do not submerge your incision in water (ocean, pools, hot tubs, baths) until cleared by your surgeon.
  • Attend all follow-up appointments to track your healing and address any concerns with our team directly.
  • Prioritize quality nutrition and stay hydrated, focusing on foods that promote healing and reduce swelling. Minimizing salt will minimize swelling. Maintaining a high-protein diet will help your body get the nutrients it needs to heal from surgery.
  • You may need a stool softener to prevent constipation that results from anesthesia and pain medications.
  • Have a support system in place, especially during the earliest post-op days. Family or a trusted friend can help with daily tasks while you rest and recover.

Tips for a Smooth Breast Lift Recovery

  • Follow Dr. Hamati’s post-op instructions carefully — your care plan is personalized to your needs.
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body elevated for the first few weeks.
  • Stay hydrated and eat nutritious, high-protein foods to support healing.
  • Avoid nicotine or smoking, which can delay recovery.
  • Don’t overdo it — though you may feel comfortable and pain-free, your body is still healing in the early weeks after surgery. Limit your activities so your body can heal.
  • Be patient with your body — swelling, firmness, and mild asymmetry are normal early on. Remember, most breasts are asymmetric to begin with.

These simple steps can make a major difference in your comfort and outcome during your breast augmentation recovery journey.

When to Contact Your Surgeon

While most recoveries are smooth, reach out to Dr. Hamati right away if you notice:

  • Sudden swelling or increasing pain
  • Redness or warmth around incisions
  • Fever or chills
  • Unusual drainage or bleeding

Our Houston team is always here to support you and ensure your healing stays on track.

Comfort and Scar Care After Breast Lift Surgery

Balanced, protein-rich nutrition and hydration support healing and energy during recovery, and surgeons commonly reinforce these habits in pre- and postoperative guidance. Pain control plans often include approved medications and guidance on how to sit or lie down to minimize discomfort in the early days. Temporary numbness, tingling, or shooting/burning sensations around the surgical area are normal. These typically resolve within a few months as nerves heal.

Once incisions have healed, you can begin scar massage to soften and optimize your scars. Using sunscreen and avoiding exposure to UV rays can ensure that the scar heals well and minimizes risk for Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, or darkening of the scar. Scars mature over months, with noticeable improvement by three months and continued refinement up to about one year under proper care.

Breast Augmentation Recovery FAQ’s:

When can I take a shower after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • Once the first 24-48 hours after surgery have passed, you may then take a shower. Allow water to run over your incisions and face away from the shower head. Do not submerge in water, like a bath tub or hot tub, as these can put you at risk for infection.

When can I resume sexual activity after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • For breast augmentation, you should wait at least 4 weeks before resuming strenuous activities, like sexual activity. This can vary from patient to patient, and you should check with your surgeon at your postop appointments.

When can I start driving my car again after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • If you’re feeling up to it and not taking any sedating medications, you may be able to resume driving after the first week. You want to feel comfortable making a hard stop or a defensive maneuver on the road.

When can I start smoking after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • You should wait at least 4-6 weeks before resuming smoking or nicotine use after a breast lift. This can vary from patient to patient depending on the healing process, and you should check with Dr. Hamati at your follow up appointments.

What is the best position to sleep in after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • Sleep with your back slightly elevated for the first few weeks to minimize tension on your incision and enhance comfort and keep swelling down. Most patients can return to side sleeping by 3–4 weeks, as long as they’re comfortable. Stomach sleeping should wait until Dr. Hamati confirms it is safe, typically around 8–12 weeks.

What are the best foods to consume after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • A low-salt, high-protein diet will help you to minimize swelling and maximize your body’s ability to heal after surgery. Maintaining a healthy component of fiber will help to prevent constipation and keep you comfortable.

What medications should I take for pain after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • Dr. Hamati uses a non-narcotic, multimodal pain regimen that will keep you comfortable after surgery. This includes Journavx or Gabapentin, Celebrex, and Tylenol scheduled for the first week. Stronger pain medications may be prescribed, if needed. You will receive a long-lasting local anesthetic called Exparel during surgery that will help control your pain for the first 48-72 hours.

How long do I need to wear support garments after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • For the best results, you should wear your postoperative support garment 24/7 for about 4 weeks. You can remove it briefly if you need a break, to shower, and to wash it. After this time you can stop wearing it at night, if you’re comfortable. After 4-6 weeks, you can begin to transition to a supportive bra.

Do I have to wear a bra after Breast Implant surgery?

  • Though you may be tempted to go without a bra after you have healed from your breast augmentation, wearing a well-fitting bra during the day will help support your breasts and keep your breasts from sagging in the future, allowing you to maintain your beautiful results for a longer time.

Can I breast feed after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • Oftentimes, women are unable to breast feed or provide sufficient breast milk to their newborn regardless of whether or not they’ve had surgery on their breasts. Regardless, most women are still able to breast feed after a breast augmentation. However, this does vary with surgical techniques. Incisions that go around the nipple that could interrupt the breast tissue or breast ducts could increase the risk of being unable to breastfeed.

Will I lose sensation in my nipples after Breast Augmentation surgery?

  • It’s common to experience temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation after breast augmentation surgery. During the early stages of recovery, you may notice numbness, tingling, increased sensitivity, or a “strange” sensation as the nerves heal. This is a normal part of the breast augmentation recovery process.
  • For most women, normal nipple sensation returns gradually over the weeks and months following surgery. The nerves typically recover fully as swelling decreases and the tissues adjust to the breast implants.
  • Permanent or long-term changes in nipple sensation are possible but very rare. Dr. Hamati takes great care to use surgical techniques that protect nerve pathways and minimize this risk.

How do I know if I need a Breast Lift with a Breast Augmentation?

  • If your breasts have considerable ptosis and your nipple is below the breast fold, you are more likely to need a breast lift combined with a breast augmentation. This procedure is called an augmentation mastopexy (aug-pexy), or a breast augmentation with lift. If your breasts have lost volume, but your nipple does not sag below the fold underneath the breast, you may be a candidate for an augmentation alone. To know for sure, you will need a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon, like Dr. Hamati.

Is a breast augmentation covered by insurance?

  • A breast augmentation is not typically covered by insurance. Though there are rare instances in which a breast augmentation would be covered, such as birth defects like Poland’s syndrome or for reconstruction following breast cancer, a patient must typically pay out-of-pocket for their breast augmentation. For more questions about breast augmentation cost, see our Breast Augmentation Cost guide.

Is it normal for one breast to heal faster than the other?

  • Yes, mild asymmetry during healing is completely normal. Each breast may swell, settle, or soften at a slightly different pace. As your implants continue to “drop and fluff,” symmetry improves significantly. If you have concerns, Dr. Hamati and our team are always here to evaluate your progress.

Is there anything a patient can do to speed up the recovery process?

  • Following your surgeon’s instructions will optimize your recovery process. Among other things, limiting your activities, avoiding nicotine, maintaining a high protein diet will ensure that you have a rapid recovery.

When can I expect my results to look their best?

  • As your body heals and your swelling subsides, you can expect your final results to begin to appear around 3 months after surgery. It is around this time that your breasts will have settled into a natural, beautiful position.  With a healthy lifestyle and proper diet and exercise, you can expect your results to look their best at about 6 months to a year after surgery. Following your postoperative instructions is key to ensuring that you get the best possible result.
