Submental Liposuction in Houston, TX

Submental liposuction is an effective facial contouring procedure for patients bothered by excess fullness beneath the chin and along the jawline. Even with a healthy lifestyle, some individuals develop stubborn fat deposits in the upper neck that can soften jawline definition and create the appearance of a heavier or less defined profile.

Houston facial plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Delaney uses submental liposuction to selectively remove excess fat beneath the chin and along the upper neck, helping create a more defined jawline, improved neck contour, and a smoother transition between the face and neck. When performed in appropriately selected patients, submental liposuction can produce a slimmer, more sculpted appearance with minimal downtime and long-lasting results. The goal is not simply to remove as much fat as possible, but to create a natural, well-defined jawline that remains harmonious with the rest of the face.

WHAT SETS US APART

Submental liposuction may appear straightforward, but achieving a natural, well-defined neck contour requires a detailed understanding of facial anatomy, balance, and aging. As a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Sean Delaney specializes exclusively in aesthetic and functional surgery of the face, nose, eyes, and neck.

Unlike body liposuction, neck contouring requires careful attention to the relationship between the chin, jawline, neck, skin quality, muscle tone, and underlying anatomy. During your consultation, Dr. Delaney evaluates all of these factors to determine whether submental liposuction alone will provide the desired improvement or whether additional procedures such as chin augmentation, neck lift surgery, or platysmaplasty may be beneficial.

Dr. Delaney has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters in facial plastic surgery and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Texas Monthly Super Doctors® Rising Star. His goal is to provide natural-looking, balanced results that enhance facial definition while preserving each patient’s unique appearance.

DURING AND AFTER SURGERY

Submental liposuction is performed in our AAAHC-accredited surgical facility, allowing patients to enjoy the convenience, privacy, and personalized care of an in-office surgical experience.

Several anesthesia options are available depending on your preferences and treatment plan. For patients seeking minimal downtime and the ability to drive themselves home, Pro-Nox™ can provide additional comfort during treatment. Local anesthesia with oral sedation is another popular option and allows patients to remain relaxed throughout the procedure; however, a responsible adult driver is required. IV sedation is also available for patients who prefer a deeper level of relaxation and comfort and likewise requires transportation home following surgery.

Immediately after surgery, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild soreness beneath the chin and along the jawline. Most patients find recovery to be easier than anticipated and are able to manage any discomfort with prescribed medications or over-the-counter pain relievers.

A compression garment is worn continuously during the first week following surgery to help minimize swelling and support the newly contoured tissues. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and other routine activities within three to five days, although some residual swelling may persist for several weeks.

While early improvements in jawline definition are often visible shortly after surgery, the neck continues to refine as swelling resolves. Most bruising and swelling improve substantially during the first one to two weeks, with continued contour refinement over the following several months.

Throughout your recovery, Dr. Sean Delaney and Team FPSA will monitor your progress closely and provide detailed guidance to help ensure a smooth healing process and optimal result.

EXPECTED COST

Every patient has unique anatomy and aesthetic goals, so treatment recommendations are individualized during the consultation process. Following your evaluation, Dr. Sean Delaney will provide a detailed treatment plan and personalized cost estimate.

Many patients choose to combine submental liposuction with procedures such as chin augmentation, neck contouring, or facial rejuvenation procedures to further enhance jawline definition and facial balance.

Facial sculpting with Buccal Fat Removal and Chin Liposuction

Submental Liposuction Faqs

Submental liposuction is designed to remove excess fat beneath the chin and along the upper neck. While this can significantly improve jawline definition and neck contour, liposuction does not directly tighten loose skin.

The best candidates for liposuction alone typically have good skin elasticity, allowing the skin to naturally contract and redrape following fat removal. Younger patients and individuals with mild to moderate excess fat often achieve excellent results with liposuction alone.

Patients with mild skin laxity who are not yet ready for a neck lift may benefit from FaceTite®, a minimally invasive radiofrequency-assisted treatment that can help tighten skin and improve neck contour while simultaneously reducing fat. FaceTite can often be combined with liposuction to enhance skin contraction and jawline definition.

For patients with more significant skin laxity, muscle banding, jowling, or age-related changes of the face and neck, a neck lift or facelift may provide a more comprehensive and longer-lasting result. These procedures address loose skin and deeper structural changes that cannot be corrected with liposuction alone.

One of the most important parts of the consultation process is determining the true cause of fullness beneath the chin. Not every “double chin” is caused by excess fat alone. Skin laxity, muscle laxity, chin projection, deep neck fat, and underlying anatomy all play important roles in determining the most appropriate treatment.

During your consultation, Dr. Sean Delaney will perform a detailed facial and neck examination and discuss all available options to help you choose the treatment plan best suited to your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

The goal is not simply to remove as much fat as possible, but to create a natural, well-defined jawline that remains harmonious with the rest of the face.

One of the most common misconceptions about neck contouring is that fullness beneath the chin is always caused by excess fat. In reality, a poorly defined jawline or “double chin” may be related to a variety of factors, including excess fat, loose skin, platysma muscle laxity, chin projection, deep neck structures, or a combination of these conditions.

During your consultation, Dr. Sean Delaney will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your face and neck, including standardized photography and a detailed assessment of your anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. This evaluation allows him to identify the specific factors contributing to your neck contour concerns and determine which treatment options are most likely to achieve the result you desire.

For some patients, submental liposuction alone may provide excellent improvement. Others may benefit from FaceTite® skin tightening, chin augmentation, a neck lift, facelift surgery, or a combination of procedures to achieve optimal jawline definition and facial balance.

Rather than recommending the same treatment for every patient, Dr. Delaney develops a personalized surgical plan based on your anatomy, goals, and long-term outcomes. The recommended treatment may or may not include liposuction, depending on what is required to create the most natural and successful result.

Dr. Delaney takes great care to place the incisions in inconspicuous spots, such as under the chin and behind the earlobes, to keep scarring to a minimum and virtually undetectable over time.

Liposuction creates a slimmer facial appearance and is ideal for those who are at a healthy weight but still have stubborn areas of fat resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not an alternative to a weight loss plan, nor is it a surgical treatment for obesity. Patients that have lost a great deal of weight and have loose skin as a result may be better candidates for facelift surgery but not facial liposuction.

Submental liposuction is commonly combined with facelift surgery to remove the fatty area directly under the chin or with chin augmentation surgery to improve jawline definition. However, it can also be done as a single outpatient procedure.

While holding a Pro-Nox mouthpiece to your mouth you then simply breathe in and out as directed by Dr. Delaney. The effects are normally felt within just a few breaths offering immediate relief of pain and anxiety without needles or pills. This sensation wears off quickly after you start to breathe normally. Patients can select Pro-Nox at a small additional cost with submental liposuction surgery. If additional procedures are performed at the same time as submental liposuction and Pro-Nox is recommended by the surgeon, there is no additional charge.

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a type of anesthesia given through a tub placed in a vein. It helps you relax, and prevents you from feeling pain. IV sedation is also known as monitored anesthesia care (MAC), conscious sedation, or twilight sleep. Patients can also select IV Sedation for their submental liposuction procedure. This needs to be administered by an Anesthesiologist or CRNA at our AAAHC accredited surgical suite. There is an additional cost for IV Sedation.
