An ear is considered protruding if it sticks out more than two centimeters from the skull. Protruding ears can significantly impact one’s self-esteem. Childhood teasing and name-calling often make those with protruding ears even more self-conscious. Many individuals with protruding ears may find themselves embarrassed to wear their hair up or choose to grow their hair long to cover their ears.

Otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, is a specialized surgery that permanently reshapes the ears into a more aesthetically pleasing configuration closer to the head. The goal of this procedure is to draw attention away from the ears to showcase a person’s other beautiful facial features.

Because the ear is a complex three-dimensional structure, the cause of protruding ears may vary significantly from individual to individual. It is therefore important to find a specialist with a thorough understanding of the ear to properly diagnose and treat the problem areas. Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney are double board-certified in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology (ear nose & throat) and know the anatomy of the ear inside and out, so you will be in the best of hands.
