The septum is the thick band of fibrous tissue, cartilage, and bone that separates the two nasal passages, as well as supports the nose and its airflow. Septoplasty Consultation
Our doctors take pride in being exceptionally thorough during septoplasty consultations. Frequently lasting over two hours, FPSA provide a comlpete nasal examination to all patients as well as make sure to take all the time necessary to answer any questions they might have and to fully understand each patient's goals. We also perform a special rhinometry test during consultations, to better gague breathing issues.
Septoplasty Surgical Technique
Septoplasty as a standalone surgery that does not require any external incisions and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to perform. The tissue covering the septum is lifted and separated so that a clear view of the inside of the nose can be achieved and the bone and cartilage assessed. During the procedure, the deviated structures are reshaped to correct the issue, while at the same time preserving the shape of the nose. The incision is closed with sutures. There is very little swelling, bruising or discomfort after surgery.

During/After Septoplasty
Septoplasty is performed under general or “twilight” anesthesia at a nearby accredited outpatient surgical facility or in our AAAHC-accredited, in-office surgical suite. There is usually very little swelling, bruising or discomfort after surgery. If the septoplasty surgery is combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, the procedure will take longer and the recovery period will also be longer. Patients can return to work and normal activities in less than a week.
Expected Cost
Septoplasty can be performed on its own, however Septoplasty is more commonly performed in combination with Inferior Turbinate Reduction and/or Rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Russell Kridel and Dr. Sean Delaney do not accept insurance. However, we can provide our patients with information so that they can file with their carrier if they so choose (Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney would be considered out-of-network providers). The cost of Septoplasty surgery will vary for both surgeons depending on complexity and severity. A cost estimate will be provided during your consultation.

Breathing Issues Only?
Some patients will choose to have Septoplasty to help alleviate symptoms of a deviated septum, such as breathing difficulties. Many of these patients like the look of their nose and thus are worried that surgery will change this. While this surgery does aim to correct medical problems, it can alter the appearance of the nose just slightly—depending on how much cartilage needs to be reshaped. It is critical to go to experienced facial plastic surgeons, such as Dr. Russell Kridel and Dr. Sean Delaney, for the peace of mind that you are in specifically trained hands that will help ensure that any slight visible changes are natural and subtle.
What Causes This?
Many individuals are born with a deviated septum, and for many, the symptoms worsen as they age. In addition to birth trauma, genetics as well as traumatic physical injury can also cause septal deviation. Some patients had an injury when they were young children and they don’t recall the event, but find as they get older they have breathing problems.
Multiple Procedures?
Septoplasty is quite frequently performed in the same surgical session as rhinoplasty surgery, for patients wishing to aslo correct undesirable aesthetics. Many patients also need enlarged turbinate correction to improve breathing. This can also be performed at the same time. In some case, additional facial plastic surgery, like chin augmentation can be combined for greater impact and to save operative and recovery time.
