Overview

Facial plastic surgeon and nose experts, Dr. Russell Kridel and Dr. Sean Delaney, often perform inferior turbinate reduction surgery for Houston patients to improve breathing. The procedure is commonly done at the same time as septoplasty surgery. Turbinate hypertrophy is a nasal condition that is the result of an enlargement of the turbinates. These represent the small structures within the nose that allow air to safely pass through the nostrils to the lungs. When the turbinates become swollen and enlarged, patients experience symptoms such as blocked nasal breathing, chronic sinus infections, nosebleeds, and severe sleep apnea because of the obstruction. During turbinate surgery, the surgeon reduces the size of the turbinate, which decreases airway resistance.

What Patients Should Look For

Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney are board-certified otolaryngologists (surgeon of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck). This means that they have spent more time studying and operating on the anatomical aspects of the nose, where turbinate issues occur, than general surgeons or surgeons of another specialty. Patients should look for a surgeon with the proper training and extensive experience when considering this procedure. Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney perform over a hundred nasal surgeries every year, many of which include septoplasty with inferior turbinate reduction surgery. Renowned for their expertise, operative skill, and scrupulous standards, they draw patients (many who are fellow doctors or medical professionals) from the local Houston area, across the United States, as well as from around the world.

Turbinate Consultation

Patients can expect to spend approximately 2-3 hours with us during their turbinate reduction consultation, which typically includes a more extensive discussion about the nasal septum and external nose. Our doctors take pride in the highest level of thoroughness. Because other nasal and facial conditions may be present if a patient is having difficulty breathing, we provide a comprehensive medical exam of the nose and face. If additional issues are found, frequently these conditions can be corrected alongside turbinate reduction surgery.

Turbinate Surgical Technique

Inferior turbinate reduction is commonly performed in conjunction with septoplasty. Together, the procedures takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to perform. The incisions are generally made inside the nose. Our surgeons perform the procedure with the assistance of surgical endoscopes. This allows a clear visualization of the inside of the nose, along with a magnifying mechanism so that the incision in the lining mucosa of the turbinate can be made carefully and precisely. Excess turbinate mucosa lining and bone are assessed and reduced as indicated to improve the nasal airway.

This was the best experience I have ever had with any doctor. She is professional, prompt and personable. I had a Septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery. It has been 4 months since my surgery and I have never felt this good in my life. I definitely recommend Dr. Strum- O'Brien. I never waited for my appointment and she always spent a long time with me explaining everything in detail.

I LOVE Dr. Kridel and his staff. It came to my attention less than a year ago that my 12 year old daughter had been suffering from a severe deviated septum as well as over-sized turbinates due to terrible allergies. As a mother, I felt awful not to have caught this sooner so I was determined to do my research and find the right doctor for the job. I was happy to find Dr. Kridel! He is a facial plastic surgeon but his specialty is rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty. I found that people from all over come to Dr. Kridel to fix other doctors's mistakes! Our visit to his office was nothing but first class. I had MANY questions which he answered with ease and care. He took his time and made sure we knew what to expect. My daughter had the surgery in January 2014 which included septoplasty and turbinate reduction. The results were outstanding. At every check-up I was amazed with the change. At two months out, she has little to no swelling and can actually breathe again:) Thank u Dr. Kridel!

After my first rhinoplasty (elsewhere) I was not happy with the results and my breathing got worse. Dr. Kridel performed a revision rhinoplasty and was able to improve the appearance of my nose. He also did a septoplasty and turbinate reduction to improve my breathing. It has been 5 weeks since my procedure and I already notice a significant difference. I am very pleased with my results.

After Turbinate Reduction

There is usually very little swelling, bruising or discomfort after surgery. If the septoplasty with inferior turbinate reduction surgery is combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, the procedure will take longer, and the recovery period will also be longer. Patients can return to work and normal activities, except strenuous exercise, in less than a week. Patients often remark that they are able to breathe better, experience less sinus complications, and that they are able to sleep well.

Turbinate Reduction Cost

Inferior turbinate reduction is rarely performed on its own.  It is commonly performed with  Septoplasty and/or Rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Russell Kridel and Dr. Sean Delaney do not accept insurance. However, we can provide our patients with information so that they can file with their carrier if they so choose (Dr. Kridel and Dr. Delaney would be considered out-of-network providers). The cost of Inferior Turbinate Reduction surgery will vary for both surgeons depending on complexity and if it is in combination with Septoplasty. A cost estimate will be provided during your consultation.

About Us
Will the Nose Look Different?

The inferior turbinate reduction procedure is performed to improve nose functionality. It will not change the look of the nose. Patients who do not have symptoms, as earlier mentioned for this surgery, but desire an improved nose appearance, should consider a cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure.

Combination Surgery?

Because a turbinectomy alters the nasal area, patients frequently also ask to have their noses aesthetically enhanced at the same time with cosmetic nose surgery.  Septoplasty is always combined with inferior turbinate reduction surgery to correct a deviated septum and breathing difficulties. Combining multiple procedures increases the operative complexity and should only be attempted by experienced, qualified, and skillful nose surgeons.
