Facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Sturm are considered leading experts in facial fillers, including Sculptra® treatments. At FPSA, our physicians design and perform Sculptra Aesthetic treatments tailored to the individual aesthetic goals of men and women in the Houston area. Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid which helps increase skin thickness to create a natural, younger-looking facial appearance that is longer lasting, up to 2 years.

About Sculptra

Sculptra Aesthetic is a facial injectable that is FDA approved for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial folds or smile lines, hollow areas of the cheeks and contour deficiencies. It is not used for lip enhancement. Sculptra Aesthetic is a different type of filler. It is known as a Poly-L-Lactic Acid and is considered a bio-activator or “volumizer”. It does not in and of itself fill the depressed areas. Instead, Sculptra is a type of space-filling substance. It works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen at the sites of injection, thereby replacing lost volume and contours to restore a fuller, more youthful appearance. The results are natural looking, and appear over a period of a few months.

What Sets Us Apart

At FPSA, your Sculptra treatments are performed by board-certified facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Angela Sturm or Dr. Russell Kridel. This provides patients with the peace of mind that they are in the hands of a physician who focuses solely on the face and neck and the procedure is done in the safety and comfort of a medical office environment. In addition, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Sturm make sure patients are comfortable and experience very little discomfort during their treatment session, so patients can be given numbing cream or a dental block if they desire. At FPSA, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Sturm take facial injections quite seriously and believe it is important for patients to have highly skilled and trained hands that can tailor injections to your specific needs with greater finesse, rather than a one size fits all approach.

Administering Sculptra

Sculptra injections are performed by either Dr. Russell Kridel or Dr. Angela Sturm in the comfort of our beautiful offices and takes about 30-50 minutes depending on the size of the area, the amount injected and any anesthetic that may be used. As facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Kridel and Dr. Sturm are not only highly trained in the facial anatomy, but they also have a keen aesthetic eye, which is critical in the design of an effective treatment plan using Sculptra and the best aesthetic outcome. Patients may feel a small prick as the needle inserts through the skin, but any pain or discomfort can be controlled with a topical anesthetic or numbing injection if desired. For the greatest results, patients should have 2-3 sessions of generally 4-6 injections over a few months. The results are natural looking, and appear over a period of a few months.

What To Expect

Sculptra Aesthetic can last at least two or more years because it causes the body to stimulate its own collagen. As with all injections, there can be temporary swelling and redness which dissipates. Immediately following a Sculptra injection, patients can resume their normal activities immediately, but exercise should be avoided for a few hours.

Expected Costs

Sculptra treatment will vary in cost depending upon how much of the medication is used and the desired results. The usual cost for each Sculptra treatment typically ranges between $700-$1000. For maximum effects, 2-3 treatments are recommended.

Sculptra FAQs

Is it Safe?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved facial filler and has a long history of safety worldwide since 1999. Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid that the human body naturally produces and has been used for general sutures for many years. Reported side effects include subtle pain, bruising, swelling or redness, bruising, and a few others. Bumps have sometimes occurred as noticeable when applying pressure to the injected area. Always consult your surgeon if any of these side effects concern you.

Best Age?

Individuals who want to replace the natural volume loss that occurs as we age or from trauma or illness, particularly in the cheek area, may be good candidates for Sculptra.  The most common age to receive Sculptra injections is between ages 35-65.

Combining Treatments?

Sculptra Aesthetic is also often used in combination with other injectables, laser skin resurfacing or laser skin tightening treatments. Sculptra can also be used as an interim non-surgical step to provide volume and lift to the cheek area. The effects of these combined treatments can be dramatic, while still requiring very little down time for recovery. Sculptra can also be a valuable adjunct to facelift surgery. A facelift will remove excess skin, but a facelift will not restore volume.
